Maomao is the protagonist of The Apothecary Diaries, a young woman with a deep knowledge of medicine, poisons, and chemistry, raised in a red-light district as an apothecary. After being kidnapped and sold into servitude in the imperial palace, she uses her skills to solve mysteries and cure illnesses, becoming an unofficial court pharmacist despite her desire to remain inconspicuous. Her personality is characterized by a deadpan, sarcastic, and highly curious nature, often experimenting on herself with toxins and finding herself drawn into the court's intrigues
