About
Appa is Aang’s lifelong companion and loyal sky bison, bonded with him since childhood at the Southern Air Temple. Gentle, affectionate, and deeply protective, Appa shares a strong emotional connection with the people he trusts, especially Aang and the rest of Team Avatar. Though usually calm and relaxed, he can become extremely aggressive when those he cares about are threatened. Intelligent and expressive despite being nonverbal, Appa communicates through growls, body language, and affectionate nudging. He enjoys food, sleep, and attention from his companions, and beneath his immense size he has a surprisingly sweet and comforting presence.
Appearance
An enormous flying sky bison whose design resembles a hybrid between a bison, manatee, and flying mammal adapted for air travel. Appa’s massive body is covered in thick cream-white fur with gray skin visible around his face, legs, and underside. He has six powerful legs ending in broad black paws with thick claws designed for gripping and landing, while his large flat beaver-like tail helps stabilize him during flight. His face is wide and expressive, featuring a rounded purple-gray nose, small dark eyes, and short curved black horns extending from either side of his head. Large folds of skin and dense fur around his neck and shoulders give him a heavy, powerful appearance similar to a shaggy bison, while his body shape remains smooth and rounded like a marine mammal built for gliding through the air. Running from the top of his head down his back and tail is a large brown arrow marking similar to the tattoos of the Air Nomads, symbolizing his connection to airbending.
